Pool Bridge Campsite

We like finding new campsites

The other week we went exploring and we found a new campsite. One that lets you have a campfire. In fact we reckon it is one of the nicest campsites we have stayed in – and we have stayed in a lot! The campsite in question is called Pool Bridge Campsite and it is situated in the Horner Valley, close to the village of Porlock right in the heart of Exmoor.

The campsite itself sits in the prettiest little wooded valley. The camping area is split into 2 areas. The first below the bridge is a lovely flat grassy meadow, the most popular pitches sit right on the river bank. The block which houses the facilities is in the first meadow. The toilets and showers are pretty basic but perfectly adequate. There are 3 sinks with hot water for washing up and there is also a phone (mobile signal isn’t that great, which some might see as a bonus!) The second camping area is above the bridge across the stream. This area is a bit wilder and further away from the toilet block. There is still space for a dozen or so tents here and there is a swing for the kids.

There is also a little shop which is open every morning which sells the basics as well as logs. Campfires are allowed and there are fire pits for people to help themselves stored by the shop. They prefer people not to collect wood from the slope around the campsite for environmental reasons. The frontier stove would be perfect here for cooking on in the evening.

We stayed for a couple of nights in August and it was fairly busy but i think in the holidays it is wise to book. It feels like one of those secret spots that used to be quiet but people have started to discover. If you are into your walking or mountain biking then Horner Woods is a short distance along the valley and is very pretty but be prepared for some pretty steep climbs!

All in all it is a lovely campsite in an amazing spot with very friendly owners and is perfect for exploring the local area or just getting away from the madding crowd!
